At the GGD you can get a free STD test. In almost all regions, you can only get a free STD test however if you are in one of the defined risk groups. People who are in these groups have a higher risk of contracting an STD and are therefor provided for by the Dutch Government (the ministry of public health, welfare and sports).
Why define risk groups for a free STD test?
The ministry of public health, welfare and sports has implemented a financial limit for free STD testing since 2015. Meaning there is a lower budget for the performance of free STD test in the Netherlands. Every region as a yearly clearly defined budget. With this budget the GGD has to perform all the free STD test for its region. It is of great importance that this money than get spent the best way. The GGD decided that these tests should go to the people with the highest risk. This however means that not everybody can go for a test at the GGD.
What are the definitions of these risk groups that can apply for a free STD test?
You belong to a risk group based on an increased risk of getting an STD if you have at least one of the following:
- You are younger than 25 years old
- You have symptoms that could be fitting with an STD.
- You earn your money through sexual contacts
- You are a man who has sex with other men.
- You have been warned by a partner that you might have gotten infected with an STD.
Are you not in any of these risk groups than you can not get a free STD test.
If you are not in any of the aforementioned groups then you will not get a free STD test at the GGD. They will most certainly decline your application. Not because they don’t want to help you, but because they can not go over their budget. The GGD sometimes also selects patients according to their region. If you are from a different region than the GGD is localized they can also decline you. The GGD Amsterdam for example, only tests locals. The GGD Utrecht only tests people of a selected region around Utrecht. The GGD often does no accept foreign short stay/travelers.
