Complaints and symptoms of trichominiasis

The incubation time of trichomoniasis varies between four days and three weeks. The chance of getting trichomoniasis can lead up to 80%. It is slightly easier for a woman than a man to get trichomoniasis. Luckily a large majority of the women infected with trichomoniasis don’t experience any symptoms at all. Almost all of the infected men do not experiency any symptoms. When infected with trichomoniasis if you do get symptoms it will be one of the following:

Symptons in women

Vaginitis/cervicitis leading to:

  • Vaginal discharge with a unplesant smell
  • Yellowish/green slightly foaming discharge
  • Pain, itching or a burning sensation when peeing
  • Pain, itching or a burning feeling during sex

Symptons in men

  • Urethritis: An infection of the urethra.
  • Urethral discharge
  • An irritating feeling in the urethra or glans
  • Anonymous testing for STD
  • Tested within 20 minutes
  • The results within 2 working day
  • STD Test starting at € 100

Anonymous testing on trichomoniasis

Recognizing trichomoniasis can be difficult. Hence it is very important to do an STD test on the parasite trichomonas vaginalis to exclude or diagnose trichomoniasis. For men we do a urinalysis. Women can get tested by means of a ‘selfswab’. This is a smear test of the mucosa of the vagina. A smear test can be performed by the patient herself or by the specialised physician depending on your preference. All our STD tests are anonymous STD test.

Results within two working days

After getting a trichomoniasis STD test performed on trichomoniasis at the OneDayClinic in AmsterdamUtrecht or Den Bosch you get the results within two working days. You can check the results online via our test result portal. Click here to check the results of your STD test. If you do get diagnosed with trichomoniasis, you can also visit OneDayClnic for treatment/medication and advise.

If you get a negative result (meaning you are not infected with trichomoniasis) you should still use protection when having sex. That way you can prevent getting trichomoniasis or an other STD in the future. Also take a look at the risk factors for getting trichomoniasis.

Treatment of trichomoniasis

An infection with trichomoniasis can be treated by a course of antibiotics. This course of antibioticis is provided by OneDayClinic. After completion of the treatment for trichomoniasis, the parasite will have disappeared. You do however can get reinfected. After a previous infection and treatment you are not immune against the parasite.

Do you have a regular sex partner? Then we do advise you to have safe sex for at least a week after treatment. Your partner probably has this STD as well and can get you reinfected. Talk with our physicians for the best advise on testing and or treatment of your partner. If you don’t have a regular partner we advise you to always use protection when having sex. After being tested positieve we strongly advise you to (at least) warn all sex partners you’ve had in  the last half year.

Complications in women

Trichomoniasis can be a very damaging infection, especially in pregnant women. An infection with trichomoniasis can lead to:

  • Preterm birth
  • Too low birth weight (compared to gestational age)
  • Increased risk of contracting another STD because of
a decreased barrier function of the mucosa.

Complications in men

Men can also get complications of trichomoniasis. This is however more uncommon caused by the fact that men also experience much less often than women. In men trichomoniasis can lead to:

  • An infection of the penis
  • A testicular infection (orchitis/epididymitis)
  • (A rare cause of) Infertility
  • Increased risk of contracting another STD because of
a decreased barrier function of the mucosa.

Possible consequences during pregnancy

When infected with trichomonas vaginalis during your pregnancy this can lead to grave consequences. Trichomoniasis can lead to preterm birth. Which means that the baby will be born before your due date. It can also cause dysmaturity  meaning that the baby is smaller or of lower birth weight than fitting with its gestational age making the baby more frail/vulnerable.

An infection of trichomoniasis is more common in women than in men. This is caused by the fact that it is easier to transfer trichomoniasis from a male to a female than the otherway around.

Do you suspect that you’ve been infected with an STD/STI? For more information get in contact with us without any obligation. Mail us at amsterdam@onedayclinic.nl or call is on the following phonenumber: +31 (0)85 070 3483.

Risk factors

Because trichomoniasis doesn’t always cause symptoms it is important to get tested. If an infection with trichomonas vaginalis isn’t recognized it can have grave consequences. Also when infected with trichomoniasis without knowing, you can transfer it to your following/current (sex) partner. Because trichomoniasis can only get excluded by the performance of an STD test we advise you to get tested after:

  • Having unsafe sex
  • The condom broke
  • A new relationship and a desire to have sex without protection.
  • A warning by an (ex-)partner.
  • Getting pregnant and not knowing if you got trichomoniasis or if you are planning to get pregnant in the future.
  • Experience symptoms fitting with trichomoniasis.

The STD examination at OneDayClinic

We often get the question how an STD examination at our clinic works. Below you can read the steps we take to test and treat you on STD’s.

How does it go after making an appointment?

After you have made the appointment, there will be a confidential conversation with the doctor. During this interview, a number of personal questions are asked to assess which risk you have run on STDs. On the basis of these risks, the doctor gives advice about which tests should be taken in your situation. Together with you, a decision is made about which tests you ultimately want to take.

Which STD can I have?

You will be asked a number of questions: whether you have sex with men, women or with both sexes and whether oral, anal or vaginal sex has taken place. This is asked because the STD’s can cause chlamydia and gonorrhea at different locations in your body. Infections with these STD’s caused by bacteria remain local and do not just spread through your body or blood. It could be that you have contracted chlamydia in your anus and not in your throat, while you have had anal and oral sex.

What should I pay attention to prior to the test?

When making the appointment it is important to take the window phase into account. The window phase is the period between the sexual contact (possible moment of infection) and the ability to demonstrate the infection with the test. For tests on chlamydia and gonorrhea we keep two weeks after the sexual contact (on indication this may sometimes be earlier). We stay on for three months for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C.

The man must not have been to the toilet for at least three hours or take morning urine with him.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

Physical examination is often not necessary. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C are excluded through a blood test. Chlamydia and gonorrhea is tested in the male via the urine and the woman through a ‘selfswab’ (or with a cotton swab). If oral and anal sex has taken place, this is excluded via an anal swab or a throat swab. You can do this yourself, but you can also leave this to the doctor.

      • Urine test

The research on chlamydia and gonorrhea in men can be done with the aid of a urine sample. When you are infected, bacteria can be found, especially in the urine. In women, a selfswab is more reliable than a urine test.

      • Blood test

Syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV can be demonstrated by a blood test.

      • Selfswab smear

With a smear, fluid is removed from the vagina. This determines the presence of chlamydia and gonorrhea. This does not hurt. Because chlamydia and gonorrhea can be found at different locations (vaginal / anal / throat), extra swabs may have to be taken. The doctor will determine in the initial interview whether this is necessary.

Do you have complaints that point to a STD? Do not wait and make an appointment for an STD test.

The treatment of an STD

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis can be treated with antibiotics. You can also contact OneDayClinic for this treatment. However, HIV is more difficult to treat. There are medicines to suppress these STDs and their symptoms, but not to remove the viruses from the body. OneDayClinic will guide you for further treatment and refer you to a specialist in the hospital.

When will I get the results?

If you have had an STD test, the urine, the smear or the blood will be examined in the laboratory. You can check the results online via our test result portal. Click here to check the results of your STD test. You can also call yourself. At OneDayClinic everything is completely anonymous.

Alert your partner

If you have an STD, it is important that you warn your partner(s). Warn not only your current partner, but also your former partners. They can also have the STD without having complaints. They can pass it on to their partners unnoticed again. By warning your partners, you prevent the STD from spreading or that they are faced with serious consequences because they have not been treated.
