Because gonorrhea often causes discharge, it is also called "the drip". The discharge can come from your penis, vagina or anus. Gonorrhea can also cause pain/burning during urination, pain in the testicles, or itching. In addition, women may experience irregular bleeding or vaginal bleeding during/after sex. It is very rare for the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause serious illness.

Read more about the common symptoms you may experience from gonorrhea below.

What are the consequences of gonorrhea?

Infertility due to gonorrhea is a widely discussed topic but fortunately not very common. With the right treatment, the bacteria is eliminated, and you are cured. Long-term consequences of gonorrhea are rare and can be prevented by getting treatment on time. Read more about this on soaaids.com

You can get gonorrhea when you have sex. Therefore, you can get it if you have sex in the vagina or anus, or if you rub your genitals against the anus or vagina. Gonorrhea can also be conducted through oral sex. If someone has gonorrhea in their throat, it is sometimes possible to contract it it through tongue kissing or if they use saliva as a lubricant.

The use of a condom usually provides sufficient protection. You can find more information about the risks associated with different forms of sexual contact here.

The symptoms a person experiences from gonorrhea depend on the location of the bacteria. This can be the penis, vagina, throat, or anus, very rarely the eye, and only in exceptional cases, the bloodstream. Typically, the symptoms include a sensation of irritation, pain, or purulent, sometimes greenisch discharge. Not everyone experiences symptoms. Most commonly, symptoms occur in the penis. You can find more information about the symptoms of gonorrhea here.

It is a good idea to get tested for gonorrhea:

  • If you have symptoms that could fit gonorrhea
  • If you have been warned about this STD
  • in case of varying sexual contacts
  • if you are in a new relationship and want to have sex without a condom
  • If you are pregnant or want to have an IUD placed

Excluding STDs contributes to more enjoyable, carefree sex with your partner(s), this too can be a reason for regular testing.

When is a gonorrhea test reliable?

A gonorrhea STD test reliably accurate from 14 days after 14 days sexual contact. If you have symptoms, testing earlier can be meaningful because if anything is found, immediate treatment can be given. This way, you don't have to walk around with gonorrhea symptoms for a long period of time.

Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea can be largely prevented by using condoms. Use a condom, especially when having sex in the vagina and anus. Do you want to know how to use a condom correctly? Click here.

Do you find it difficult to bring up the topic of using a condom? Sense provides information and tips on this.

During the appointment, discuss with the doctor/nurse which tests are necessary. An appointment takes an average of 15 minutes.

Important for your test at OneDayClinic:

  • Want to test anonymously? You can make up a first name and date of birth during the appointment. You need to be able to remember them.
  • The result of a rapid test is communicated over the phone
  • You can view the results of a laboratory test here, using your unique code and given date of birth

Taking a gonorrhea test is as follows:

  • To test the urethra we use urine (the first stream), you can collect this during the appointment or bring it with you in a clean jar/bottle. You should not have urinated for at least 1.5 hours before collecting the sample.
  • The vaginal and/or anal samples are taken with a swab (cotton swab). You can do this yourself during the appointment. This can also be done during menstruation.
  • If the throat needs to be tested, the doctor/nurse will take a swab from the throat
  • Are you a transgender person? Click here for more information.

Note on the rapid test:

A rapid test takes 90 minutes and is conducted immediately after your appointment. The result can only be read on-site by the doctor/nurse. Want to get the results the same day? Make sure to schedule an appointment at least 2 hours before closing time. You can give us a call to check on this.

Make an appointment

Making an appointment is easy, and often you can be seen the same day. Schedule an appointment up to 1 hour in advance through the website or call to make an appointment immediately.

Gonorrhea test

Have you tested positive for gonorrhea? At OneDayClinic, you can also be treated anonymously. Would you like to make an appointment for treatment? Click here

Gonorrhea is treated with an injection (antibiotics). You will receive this shot during a treatment appointment at the clinic. We have the medication in stock. Therefore, you do not have to visit the pharmacy and can remain completely anonymous.

Would you rather get a prescription and go to your own pharmacy? Take our results to your own family doctor so they can prescribe it. Keep in mind that this is inconvenient for your doctor if you have tested anonymously. You can email us to request an official pdf with lab logo

Do you have a regular sex partner? Make a double appointment (or call) and come together to the treatment appointment. This way, we can also provide treatment for your partner based on your results.

Have you tested positive elsewhere? If you bring an ID and an official result (from a certified lab) we will be happy to assist you. Unfortunately, this cannot be done with an anonymous result from elsewhere.

After treatment

After the antibiotic treatment it is important to not have sex and don't masturbate for 7 days; after this period, it is safe to have sex again.

You can contract gonorrhea multiple times; unfortunately, you do not become immune. That's why it's important to warn your sex partners. Do you find this difficult? You can request a code for partnerwaarrschuwing.nl during your treatment appointment - this allows you to warn partners anonymously.

Usually, after treatment, you don't need to retest to see if the gonorrhea is gone. In the Netherlands resistance to the antibiotics used is not a problem. Do you still want to do a check-up? This is possible from 6 weeks after treatment.

Why choose a gonorrhea test at OneDayClinic?

OneDayClinic is a private clinic specialized in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Our goal is to make STD testing easier and more accessible. You can discuss all your questions and concerns about STDs with our expert doctors and nurses during a consultation appointment at our clinic. Our BIG-registered staff is friendly, tactful, discreet and professional. Our clinics are small in size, so won't be in a massive waiting room, as can be the case at the Public Health Service (GGD). We have personal attention, listen to your needs and offer tailored advice. We are here to make the threshold for your gonorrhea test as low as possible, because we understand that talking about sex and STDs can already be challenging for many people.

Our STD tests are just as reliable as at the GP or Public Health Service (GGD) because our lab is ISO-accredited. Our tests are performed by the Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center, a large hospital laboratory with excellent expertise in diagnosing sexually transmitted diseases,  closely collaborating with the medical microbiologists at the Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis for all STD diagnoses.
