  • Mycoplasma is a bacterium that is sexually transmitted (an STD)
  • Condoms protect well against mycoplasma, but not 100%
  • Mycoplasma has only recently been considered an STD
  • Testing for mycoplasma is often unnecessary
  • Mycoplasma can be treated with antibiotics, but is sometimes resistant

For more information on STDs: go to www.soaaids.nl and/or www.thuisarts.nl

Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that can be transmitted through sexual contact. It was only discovered in 1980 and therefore has not been counted as an STD for very long. The bacterium has existed for much longer, of course, but we have only recently been able to test for it properly thanks to new techniques. Not enough research has been done on it yet to say much about its risks and consequences, but it seems to do little harm in most people. Moreover, in people without symptoms, it seems better not to treat mycoplasma. If you have no symptoms, you can be a carrier of mycoplasma just fine without any health consequences. But a very small proportion of people who have mycoplasma develop symptoms. The only way to find out if you have mycoplasma is to do a mycoplasma test.

What are the symptoms of mycoplasma?

Mycoplasma is also sometimes found in women with symptoms, but it has not yet been proven that these symptoms are actually caused by mycoplasma. There is also no evidence that mycoplasma causes infertility.

You can catch mycoplasma through sexual contact. So you can get it when you have sex in the vagina or anus. Sometimes you can catch it through oral sex, but mycoplasma in the throat is not very common.

Usually, using a condom provides enough protection against mycoplasma.

Dutch experts recommend getting tested for mycoplasma only if:

  • You have a penis and have pain when urinating, discharge and/or irritation symptoms of the urethra
  • and you have already ruled out chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • AND you have had symptoms for more than 4 weeks

Sometimes women are advised to test for mycoplasma and other STDs before having an IUD placed or any other gynecological procedure. In this, always follow your doctor's advice.

When a mycoplasma test is reliable we are not sure yet, there is not enough research on that. Probably waiting 3-4 weeks after sex is enough.

Sexually transmitted infections such as mycoplasma can largely be prevented by using condoms. In particular, use a condom when having sex in the vagina and anus. Want to know how to use a condom correctly? Then click here

It's not always easy to start talking about condoms, we understand. On the Sense website, you'll find helpful information and tips for how best to do this.

Together with the doctor/nurse, you will discuss which tests are needed for you during the appointment. So you do not need to know this in advance. An appointment takes on average 15 minutes. Making an appointment is very easy. You book it yourself online or you can call us. Usually there is space the same day!

Important for your test at OneDayClinic:

  • Want to test mycoplasma anonymously? Then you can make up your own first name and date of birth during the appointment. You must be able to remember these.
  • You can view your mycoplasma test results here, with your unique code and given date of birth

Taking a mycoplasma test is as follows :

  • To test the penis (urethra) we use urine (the first stream), you can collect this during the appointment or bring it with you in a clean jar/bottle. You must not have urinated for at least 1.5 hours before collection.
  • A vaginal sampling is done with a swab (cotton swab). You can take this yourself during the appointment. This can also be done during menstruation.
  • Are you a trans woman or man? Clickherefor more information.
Mycoplasma test

Mycoplasma can be treated with antibiotics (tablets). This is only necessary if you experience symptoms due to mycoplasma or if your regular sex partner has symptoms of it.

Unfortunately, resistance to certain antibiotics does sometimes occur. Sometimes it is necessary to do a control test and then try another antibiotic. In this you will be guided by your doctor.

Do you want treatment for mycoplasma? If so, you can contact your family doctor or OneDayClinic.

Would you like to make an appointment for treatment with us? Then click here. During your appointment, one of our doctors will see which medicine is best for you.

Would you like to see your family doctor? Then email us to receive an official pdf of your results. Include your name, date of birth, the clinic you went to and your bar code. Keep in mind that this may be inconvenient for your doctor if you tested anonymously.

Your regular sex partner can also be co-treated. This is to prevent reinfection and recurrence of symptoms.

Do you have a regular sex partner? Make a double appointment (or call) and come together to the treatment appointment. This way, we can also provide treatment for your partner based on your results.

Have you tested positive elsewhere? If you bring ID and an official result (from a certified lab) we will be happy to help you. Unfortunately, this is not possible with an anonymous result from elsewhere.

After treatment

After antibiotic treatment, it is important not to have sex or masturbate for 7 days.

You can contract mycoplasma multiple times; unfortunately, you do not become immune. Therefore, it is important to warn your regular sex partner(s).

Re-testing is not always necessary. You will receive personal advice about this during your treatment appointment.
