What you need to know about the HPV test

  • The HPV test detects human papillomavirus (hr-HPV), a sexually transmitted disease(STD test).
  • Hr-HPV can cause cervical cancer in rare cases. This process occurs very slowly.
  • In most cases, your body clears the virus on its own.
  • Women age 30 and older are tested for hr-HPV every five years for free in the population screening program.
  • More frequent testing is not necessary unless you experience symptoms.
  • If you have symptoms, you can get a free HPV test through your doctor.
  • The test is performed through an internal vaginal examination with a speculum.
  • There is no link between genital warts and cervical cancer.

HPV is a virus that is sexually transmitted and common. Almost all people in the Netherlands have had HPV at one time or another. Currently, more than 100 different HPV variants are known, some of which pose a high risk of eventually developing cancer and others a low risk of doing so. Some low-risk variants cause genital warts

The high-risk variants (hr-HPV) can irritate the cells of the cervix so much that those cells change and can become malignant. Fortunately, usually the body cleans up the infection itself in time before too many cell changes occur.

In rare cases, hr-HPV can cause cervical cancer. This is a very slow process that takes 12-15 years. So you may very well catch it in time. Therefore, through the population screening program, all women in the Netherlands from the age of 30 are tested preventively for this every 5 years for free. General practitioners also test women with complaints for hr-HPV free of charge outside the population screening.

Complaints where an hr-HPV test is good to do include: vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation and/or bleeding during or after sex (contact bleeding).

HPV is a highly contagious virus that is transmitted primarily through sexual contact. The virus does not spread through blood, but rather through direct skin-to-skin contact. This means you can become infected by touching the penis or vagina, or through oral and anal sex.

In addition, you can also contract HPV through indirect contact. Objects such as towels, sex toys or razors can transmit the virus when shared. Because HPV is so easily spread, it is wise to consider an HPV test when in doubt. That way you'll know quickly where you stand.

In the Netherlands, women starting at age 30 receive an invitation for a free hr-HPV test every five years through population screening. Participation is not mandatory; it remains a personal choice. If you decide to participate, you can have a smear test taken at your family doctor's office or request a home test. Did you receive the invitation a while ago? Often you can still participate. Feel free to check with your doctor.

Are you experiencing symptoms that may be related to HPV? Then you can also be tested for free outside the population screening through your family doctor. In that case, the family doctor can take a smear and request the HPV test.

Don't have a family doctor in the Netherlands, or feel more comfortable with an alternative testing option? Then you can turn to OneDayClinic. Here you do pay for the HPV test yourself, but you receive expert and discreet care with no waiting time.

For what symptoms is an HPV test wise?

It may be useful to have a smear test done for the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding between your periods
  • Blood loss during or immediately after sex

These symptoms can also be caused by other STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma or trichomonas. In many cases there is an innocent cause, such as hormonal fluctuations, a vaginal yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Therefore, always get proper advice from a doctor.

HPV test for men

Men are basically not tested preventively for hr-HPV. Only when you are HIV-positive and have anal sex (bottom) is preventive testing done. This is done through a specialist. In other cases, preventive HPV testing for men is unnecessary and not available.

The use of condoms significantly reduces the risk of hr-HPV infection. Still, they do not offer complete protection, as the virus can also spread through skin-to-skin contact.

Vaccines are also available that protect against the riskiest types of HPV. Young people between the ages of 9 and 24 can get vaccinated for free through the National Vaccination Program. Are you older than 24? Then you can still get vaccinated through your family doctor, although there will be a cost.

Please note that even if you have been vaccinated, it is important to participate in population screening. This is because a vaccine does not protect against all HPV types, so an HPV test remains valuable.

Want to know more about the HPV vaccination? Then check out the information on Thuisarts.nl.

For an HPV test, a smear is taken during an internal vaginal examination, also called a speculum examination. During this, the doctor strokes a small brush along the cervix to take cells and mucous membrane. This swab is then sent to a specialized pathology laboratory for analysis. You can find more explanation about the smear test at Thuisarts.nl.

At OneDayClinic, you can choose several testing options:

  • A test for the presence of hr-HPV types (to see if you are infected with a high-risk type)
  • An examination of cell changes, where the smear is assessed under the microscope

According to the medical guideline, the first step is to see if hr-HPV is present. Only if it is, microscopic examination (Pap-smear) for cell changes follows. At OneDayClinic, you decide which of these parts you want to have performed. Please indicate this clearly during your consultation.

What you need to know about the test appointment

An HPV test at OneDayClinic can only be scheduled by phone. The appointment takes about 30 minutes. Please note that you cannot have a smear test during your period. To be on the safe side, bring sanitary napkins, as there may be some bleeding after the test.

Please note that this survey cannot be conducted anonymously. You will receive the results after one to two weeks. Once the results are in, we will schedule a phone appointment with the doctor. You will then receive a PDF of the results by e-mail.

Hpv test

If you test positive for hr-HPV, it is important to share the result with your family doctor. He or she can assess whether you should be tested more often or whether a referral to a gynecologist is necessary.

Infection with a high-risk type of HPV does not automatically mean you need treatment. In many cases, your body clears the virus on its own within one to two years, with no further action required.

Are abnormal cells found in the smear (Pap-smear)? Then the family doctor always refers you to a gynecologist. This specialist examines whether treatment is necessary and discusses with you what the best next step is in your situation.

Please note: OneDayClinic itself does not perform treatments and does not establish a follow-up policy. For further steps after an HPV test, you can only contact your family doctor or gynecologist.

OneDayClinic is the only clinic for private STD care in the Netherlands recognized by SOAaids. We specialize in sexual health and focus on the prevention, detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Our goal is to make an STD test accessible and low-threshold for everyone.

Our doctors and nurses take plenty of time for you. They listen, advise and make sure you feel comfortable. You always get a test recommendation that fits your situation. Moreover, our locations are small-scale, without crowded waiting rooms. The chance that you will meet acquaintances is therefore small, which lowers the threshold to get tested.

The analysis of your HPV test is performed at the Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center. This is an ISO-certified hospital laboratory with extensive experience in STD diagnostics. So you are assured of a reliable result.

Getting an HPV test anonymously

Privacy is paramount at OneDayClinic. You can take a completely anonymous HPV test with us. All you have to provide is a first name and date of birth - and you can make those up yourself. Your data is not shared with your health insurance company, so you remain completely anonymous.

Need a quick appointment? In many cases, you can get a same-day appointment. You pay at the clinic by pin or cash. The cost for an HPV test is 225 euros. So you know in advance exactly where you stand.

Is the result positive? Even then you have come to the right place for an anonymous treatment. Usually HPV disappears by itself from your body. If abnormal cells are found, we refer you to a gynecologist for further examination or treatment. During your appointment, we will calmly explain everything to you.

Better safe than sorry.
