- Genital warts are contagious bumps around the genitals and anus.
- They are caused by the HPV virus which is sexually transmitted (an STD)
- Condoms reduce risk of infection but do not completely prevent it
- Genital warts are harmless
- Treatment is not necessary, but possible
- Usually, they go away on their own within 2 years
- There is no relation between genital warts and (cervical) cancer
Genital warts are warts located in the area around the genitals and/or anus. They are benign, but many people find them bothersome and unsightly. They are caused by certain types of the "Human Papillomavirus" (HPV). These types are not dangerous and do not pose a risk of (cervical) cancer.

What are the symptoms of genital warts?
Genital warts can have different appearances. They can be flat, or resemble a small cauliflower. They can be very small, or a bit larger. You can have one or several clusters. They may vary in color; often they are skin-colored, but they can also be a slightly darker or grayish.
Sometimes the warts itch, but usually you don't feel anything.
You can contract the HPV virus from someone who has the virus, and the risk is higher when someone has warts. Almost everyone in the Netherlands eventually contracts this virus, but relatively few people actually develop warts as a result.
You can transmit or contract the virus from someone who carries the virus, if:
- the penis, vagina and anus touch each other or the skin around them
- there is contact between hands and genitals and/or anus
- sharing your towels or razor blades
Sexually transmitted infections such as genital warts can only be partially prevented by using condoms, but it obviously reduces the risk of infection. In addition, it is advised to avoid unnecessary contact with the warts and apply good hand hygiene.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely prevent the transmission of the virus to your partner(s), but fortunately, genital warts are harmless, and very few people actually develop warts with an HPV infection!
Today, there is an HPV vaccine that also protects against genital warts. This is called Gardasil® or Gardasil 9®.. You can obtain it from Onedayclinic at all locations.
If you want to know if you have genital warts, a doctor/nurse diagnose during the consultation by examining the spots. Together, you can determine if treatment is meaningful and desirable for you. An appointment typically lasts around 15 minutes.
Important for your test at OneDayClinic:
Would you like to be helped anonymously? You can make up your own first name and date of birth during the appointment. However, you must be able to remember them.

After being diagnosed with genital warts, you can choose to be treated at OneDayClinic.
During the appointment, the doctor/nurse may prescribe Condyline, which is a liquid that you can easily apply at home. We have the medication in stock. Therefore, you do not have to visit the pharmacy and can remain completely anonymous.
At some OneDayClinic locations we offer treatment with Histofreezer, then the warts are touched up. Please contact us for options for this treatment
Sometimes we cannot offer treatment because the warts are too close to the opening of the vagina, urethra, or (possibly) in the anus. In such cases, we will advise you to see your general practitioner. They can, if necessary, refer you to a specialist.
