Chlamydia is a bacterium(Chlamydia trachomatis) that can be transmitted through sexual contact. It is the most common bacterial STD in the Netherlands. Sometimes chlamydia causes symptoms, but most of the time it does not. According to the GGD's new guideline, you only need to be tested in case of complaints and if you have been warned (without complaints). Because you can have (and transmit) this STD without experiencing symptoms. The way to find out is to do a chlamydia test. Many general practitioners still follow the "old" guidelines and still test people without symptoms.
The type of symptoms depends on the location (urethra, vagina and/or anus) of the infection. You may have pain and/or burning when urinating. There may be (more) discharge from the penis, vagina or anus. The anus may itch and there may be blood and mucus in the stool. In addition, women can sometimes lose blood from the vagina without having their period or have pain/blood loss during or after sex.
All the symptoms you can get from chlamydia are listed below.
What are the consequences of chlamydia?
In most people, chlamydia does not cause long-term effects. After treatment, the bacteria are gone from your body and you are cured.
Infertility due to chlamydia is a much-discussed topic, but is fortunately quite rare (less than 1%). Click here to learn more about infertility due to chlamydia.
What is LGV chlamydia?
There is also a subtype of chlamydia called LGV (lymphogranuloma venereum). This can cause significant symptoms of the rectum and anus, and sometimes an ulcer on the penis with swollen lymph nodes in the groin. LGV is relatively rare in the Netherlands. You are mainly at risk if you are man who has sex with men. You can read more about LGV here.
You can get chlamydia when you have sex. Therefore, you can get it if you have sex in the vagina or anus, or if you rub your genitals against the anus or vagina. The risk is very low during oral sex (both giving and receiving). Chlamydia in the throat is relatively rare.
The use of a condom usually provides sufficient protection. You can find more information about the risks associated with different forms of sexual contact here.
Common symptoms you may have from chlamydia are listed below. Do you have such symptoms? It's a good idea to get tested for chlamydia and perhaps other STDs as well. You can also find more information at soaaids.com.

Many people find it difficult to start talking about condoms. On the Sense website, you'll find helpful tips for this.
Together with the doctor/nurse, discuss during the appointment which tests are needed. You do not need to know this in advance. An appointment takes an average of 15 minutes.
Important for your STD test at OneDayClinic:
- Want to test anonymously? You can make up a first name and date of birth during the appointment. You need to be able to remember them.
- The result of a rapid test is communicated over the phone
- You can view the results of a laboratory test here, using your unique code and given date of birth
Taking a chlamydia test is as follows :
- To test the urethra we use urine (the first stream), you can collect this during the appointment or bring it with you in a clean jar/bottle. You should not have urinated for at least 1.5 hours before collecting the sample.
- The vaginal and/or anal samples are taken using a swab (cotton swab). You can take these yourself during the appointment. This can also be done during menstruation.
- If the throat needs to be tested, the doctor/nurse will take a swab from the throat
- Are you a transgender person? Click here for more information.

Note on the rapid test:
A rapid test takes 90 minutes and is conducted immediately after your appointment. The result can only be read on-site by the doctor/nurse. Want to get the results the same day? Make sure to schedule an appointment at least 2 hours before closing time. You can give us a call to check on this.
Make an appointment
Making an appointment is easy, and often you can be seen the same day. Schedule an appointment up to 1 hour in advance through the website or call to make an appointment immediately.
Have you tested positive for chlamydia? At OneDayClinic, you can also be treated anonymously. Would you like to make an appointment for treatment? Clickhere.
Chlamydia is treated with tablets (antibiotics). This treatment takes place during a treatment appointment at the clinic. We have the medication in stock. Therefore, you don't need to go to the pharmacy and can remain completely anonymous.
The treatment duration (1 day vs. 7 days) depends on the location: penis, vagina and/or anus. If an anal chlamydia infection is found, it is automatically checked for LGV-type chlamydia. In that case, the treatment lasts for 3 weeks.
Would you rather get a prescription and go to your own pharmacy? Take our results to your own family doctor so they can prescribe it. Keep in mind that this is inconvenient for your doctor if you have tested anonymously. You can email us to request an official pdf with lab logo.
Do you have a regular sex partner? Make a double appointment (or call) and come together to the treatment appointment. This way, we can also provide treatment for your partner based on your results.
Have you tested positive elsewhere? If you bring an ID and an official result (from a certified lab) we will be happy to assist you. Unfortunately, this cannot be done with an anonymous result from elsewhere.
After treatment
After starting antibiotic treatment, it is important to not have sex or masturbate for 7 days; after this, it is safe to have sex again.
You can contract chlamydia multiple times; unfortunately, you do not become immune. That's why it's important to warn your sexual partners. Do you find this difficult? You can request a code for partnerwaarschuwing.nl during your treatment appointment - this allows you to warn partners anonymously.
You do not have to retest after treatment to see if the chlamydia is gone. In the Netherlands, resistance to the antibiotics used is not a problem. Do you still want a check-up? This can be done from 6 weeks after treatment.
