Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that can be transmitted through sexual contact. In the Netherlands, this parasite is rare. In areas such as Southeast Asia and Africa, trichomonas is most common.
Sometimes trichomonas causes symptoms; this can also be years later. Women get symptoms more often than men. Men usually have no symptoms. Even if you have no symptoms, you can still have trichomonas and infect others. Men are infectious for an average of 5 weeks, after which the parasite disappears from their urethra. In the meantime, men can unknowingly infect others. So the best way to find out is to have a trichomonas test done in time if you think you may be infected; 4 weeks after sex is optimal.
What are the symptoms of trichomonas?
In women, trichomonas sometimes causes itching, swelling and irritation of the vagina and vulva, pain during urination and altered discharge with an unpleasant odor, sometimes yellow-green with bubbles.
In men, trichomonas sometimes causes discharge, pain when urinating and glans inflammation with a skin rash.

You can get trichomonas if you have sex with the penis in the vagina. You can also get it when fluid from the penis or vagina gets onto your genitals, such as through your hands or by rubbing along them. Read more about how STIs can and cannot be spread here.
It is good to get tested for trichomonas if:
- You have symptoms that could fit trichomonas
- you have been warned about trichomonas
- you have an IUD placed and your doctor has advised this
An STD test for trichomonas is well reliable starting 4 weeks after sex. Do you have symptoms? In this case earlier testing can be useful, because if something is found, treatment can be given right away. Then you won't have to walk around with trichomonas symptoms for a long time. Your symptoms can also be caused by something else, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma, bacterial vaginosis or a fungal infection. We will be happy to give you personal advice during your appointment.
Sexually transmitted infections such as trichomonas, for the most part, can be prevented by using condoms. In particular, use a condom when having sex in the vagina and anus. Want to know how to use a condom correctly? Then click here.
Together with the doctor/nurse, you will discuss which tests are needed during the appointment. So you do not need to know in advance which tests you want to do. We will advise you during your appointment. An appointment takes on average 15 minutes.

Taking a trichomonas test is as follows :
- To test the penis/ urethra we use urine (the first stream), you can collect this during the appointment or bring it with you in a clean jar/bottle. You must not have urinated for at least 1.5 hours before collection.
- A vaginal sampling is done with a swab (cotton swab). You can take this yourself during the appointment. This can also be done during menstruation.

Note on the rapid test:
A rapid test takes 90 minutes and is conducted immediately after your appointment. The result can only be read on-site by the doctor/nurse. Want to get the results the same day? Make sure to schedule an appointment at least 2 hours before closing time. You can give us a call to check on this.
Make an appointment
Making an appointment is easy, and often you can be seen the same day. Schedule an appointment up to 1 hour in advance through the website or call to make an appointment immediately.

Trichomonas is treated with an anti-parasite drug (tablets). After this, the infection goes away and you are cured. Please note, you should not drink alcohol around the treatment!
Treatment takes place during a treatment appointment at the clinic. We have the medication in stock. Therefore, you do not need to visit the pharmacy and can remain completely anonymous.
Your sex partners from the previous 4 weeks should also be treated, even if they have no symptoms.
Would you rather get a prescription and go to your own pharmacy? Then take our results to your own family doctor so they can prescribe it. Keep in mind that this is inconvenient for your doctor if you tested anonymously. Email us to receive an official pdf of your results. Include your name, date of birth, the clinic you went to and your barcode.
Do you have a regular sex partner? Make a double appointment (or call) and come to the treatment appointment together. Then we can treat your partner along with you on your results.
Have you tested positive elsewhere? If you have an ID and an official result, we will be happy to assist you. Unfortunately, this cannot be done with an anonymous result from elsewhere.
After treatment
After antibiotic treatment, it is important not to have sex or masturbate for 7 days; after this it is safe again.
In principle you do not need to test again after treatment to see if the trichomonas is gone. If you continue to have symptoms for more than 3 weeks, retesting is wise.
