CRP Value Testing

CRP Value Testing

What is CRP?

CRP stands for C-reactive protein. This is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation in the body. When an infection or inflammation is present, the CRP level in the blood rises. The higher the value, the more severe the inflammation can be.

A CRP test is often used to check for infection or chronic inflammatory disease. The test can also help determine whether a treatment is effective.

Why measure your CRP value?

Measuring your CRP level can be helpful if you are experiencing persistent symptoms such as fever, fatigue, joint pain or other signs of inflammation. An elevated CRP value can indicate several health problems, such as:

  • Acute infections, such as a bacterial or viral infection
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease
  • Cardiovascular disease, as prolonged inflammation contributes to the formation of arterial calcification
  • Tissue damage after surgery or trauma

A CRP test does not provide a direct diagnosis, but it does help determine whether an inflammatory process is active in the body.

How does a CRP test work?

A CRP test is performed through a blood test. At One Day Clinic, you can easily book a test online. This goes as follows:

  1. You make an appointment through the website and choose a location.
  2. A small amount of blood is drawn by a professional.
  3. The blood is analyzed in a laboratory to measure CRP levels.
  4. Within a short time you will receive the results digitally.

The CRP test measures the amount of C-reactive protein in the blood. This is expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L).

What do the CRP values mean?

The CRP value may vary depending on your health status. The general guidelines are:

  • Less than 3 mg/L: Normal value, no inflammation present.
  • 3 - 10 mg/L: Slight elevation, may indicate mild inflammation or infection.
  • 10 - 50 mg/L: Moderate elevation, possibly acute infection or chronic inflammation.
  • More than 50 mg/L: Obvious inflammation, possibly a serious infection or autoimmune disease.

If the value is very high, such as above 100 mg/L, there may be a serious bacterial infection or sepsis.

What if your CRP level is elevated?

If the test shows an elevated CRP level, it is important to discuss the result with your doctor. An elevated value does not immediately mean that something serious is going on, but it may indicate that further investigation is needed.

Possible next steps may include:

  • Additional blood tests to determine the cause of inflammation
  • Urine or stool test if infection is suspected
  • Imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI, if joint or organ inflammation is suspected
  • Adjustment of medication or lifestyle if chronic inflammation is present
