Can you get chlamydia without having sex?

How is chlamydia transmitted?
Chlamydia is almost always transmitted through sexual contact. This can happen through:
- Vaginal sex: Unprotected sex is a common mode of transmission.
- Anal sex: The bacteria can also be passed on in this process.
- Oral sex: Although less common, chlamydia can be transmitted through oral sex and cause an infection in the throat.
Can you get chlamydia without sexual intercourse?
In most cases, sexual contact is necessary to get chlamydia. However, there are some exceptional situations in which you can become infected without full sexual intercourse:
- Sexual contact without penetration: Sharing infected body fluids, such as pre-cum or semen, may be enough to transmit the bacteria.
- Use of contaminated sex toys: If sex toys are not cleaned properly or shared without protection (such as a condom), the bacteria can be transmitted.
Can chlamydia spread through other routes?
Chlamydia is not spread through:
- Toilets or bathrooms
- Towels or shared beds
- Swimming pools or saunas
This is because the bacteria cannot survive outside the body for long, ruling out these routes of spread.
Testing for unprotected sex
Although the main way you get chlamydia is through sexual contact, other forms of intimate contact or sharing sex toys can also lead to infection. It is important to use condoms and get regular STI tests if you have had unprotected sex.
