More STI consultations in 2024

The RIVM Report: Key Findings
According to RIVM, there were a total of 172,113 STD consultations at the Centers for Sexual Health (CSG) in 2023. The percentage of consultations in which an STD was diagnosed remained the same at 21%. The increase in the number of consultations and the rise in gonorrhea infections are of concern. Gonorrhea increased by 31%, which was mostly seen among young women and heterosexual men.
Causes of the Increase
The increase in STD consultations can be attributed to several factors:
Increased Awareness
More people are aware of the importance of STD testing, thanks in part to campaigns and education. This has led to an increase in the number of people getting tested.
Changing Sexual Behavior
Condom use has declined, leading to an increase in STDs. In addition, changes in sexual networks and practices have contributed to the spread of STDs.
Better Access to Testing
The accessibility of STD testing has improved. People can get tested faster and more easily at various providers, including the GGD, family doctors and private clinics such as OneDayClinic.
Impact on Public Health
The increase in STDs has serious public health implications. Untreated STDs can lead to serious health problems, such as infertility and increased risk of HIV infections. The rise in gonorrhea is of particular concern because of the potential for antibiotic resistance, which makes treatment difficult.
What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?
Regular Testing
If you are sexually active, it is important to get tested regularly for STDs. This helps detect and treat any infections early, preventing further spread.
Use Condoms
Condoms are an effective means of preventing the spread of STDs. Always have condoms on hand and use them correctly during any sexual activity.
Open Communication with Sexual Partners
It is crucial to communicate openly and honestly with your sexual partners about STDs and testing. This helps prevent the spread of infections and ensures a healthy and safe sexual relationship.
The Role of Health Institutions
Centers for Sexual Health (CSG).
GPs
Family physicians are also an important link in STD care. They can perform testing, treat and refer to specialists if needed. GP practices are often more approachable and accessible to people who want to get tested.
Online Providers
Private clinics such as OneDayClinic make it possible to get an STD test anonymously and quickly. This lowers the barrier for people who might not otherwise get tested because of privacy concerns.
Prevention and Education
Prevention and education remain crucial in the fight against STDs. It is important that people are well informed about the risks of unprotected sex and the importance of regular STD testing. Campaigns and education programs can help raise awareness and encourage behavior change.
