Sexual Health Survey 2023

Sexual Health Survey 2023

Sexual health and rights are important topics in the Netherlands. Recent research by Rutgers shows that the Dutch are generally positive about these topics. They see sex education as essential and support women's freedom of choice in abortion. This positive attitude is encouraging and shows that there is broad support for these important issues.

A decline in the use of contraception

Despite these positive views, there are also troubling developments. One is the decline in the use of contraception, such as condoms and the birth control pill. This is an alarming trend because it can lead to an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. It is important to understand why people are less likely to choose these preventive measures. Possibly a lack of knowledge or access to contraceptives plays a role. This calls for targeted education and better access to contraception.

The ongoing problem of sexual violence

Sexual violence remains a major problem in the Netherlands. Despite increased attention to the issue, the numbers remain shockingly high. This not only has serious physical and emotional consequences for victims, but also affects the broader society. More than awareness is needed. It involves effective prevention, better support for victims, and stronger enforcement of laws to punish offenders. Only then can we make progress in the fight against sexual violence.

Discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons

Another area of concern is the ongoing discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons. Although the Netherlands is internationally known as a country with progressive views on sexual diversity, LGBTQ+ persons still experience discrimination and lack of acceptance. This can have serious consequences for their mental and physical health. More needs to be done to promote acceptance of sexual diversity, both in schools and in the broader society. This requires ongoing education and awareness campaigns.

The need for more investment in sex education

To reverse these negative trends, increased investment in sex education is critical. This means not only providing comprehensive and accessible information on contraception, but also making topics such as sexual violence and sexual diversity open to discussion. Schools play a key role here, but parents, health care providers and policy makers must also be involved.

The need for STD testing

With the decline in the use of contraception, such as condoms, the risk of spreading sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is increasing. This makes regular STD testing more important than ever. Young people, who may have less knowledge about the risks, are especially at risk. STI testing not only helps detect and treat infections early, but also helps reduce further spread. By testing regularly, you protect not only yourself, but also your partners and the broader community.
