Syfilis is een SOA die door een bacterie wordt veroorzaakt. Syfilis wordt overgedragen bij seksueel contact met een besmet persoon, door middel van de penis, vagina, anus, maar ook via de mond. Iemand met syfilis kan een wondje op de lip of in de mond hebben en bij orale seks of bij het zoenen wordt de bacterie overgedragen. Syfilis is goed te behandelen, maar dan moet je wel weten dat je besmet bent. Onbehandelde syfilis kan leiden tot grote gezondheidsklachten. Na onbeschermde seks is een syfilis SOA test dan ook aan te raden.

Timely testing for syphilis

By no means everyone develops symptoms when infected with syphilis. But this does not make you less contagious. If you do have unprotected sex again, you can still infect someone else. If you do experience symptoms, then typical symptoms occur in certain stages. The first stage is 2 to 12 weeks after infection. You will get sores on the spot where you have been infected. Sometimes this is not visible if it occurs in the vagina or anus. In the second stage after 3 to 8 weeks, the complaints are rashes or bumps on the skin and you can get flu-like symptoms. Between the 2nd and 3rd stages, there is a dormant period that can sometimes last for years. The third stage is dangerous because all organs can become infected, including the heart.
