Free STI test/STD test at the GGD
You can get a free STI test at the GGD. In most regions, such as the Amsterdam region, Amsterdam, the Utrecht region, and the region of The Hague, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, and Nijmegen, this is only possible if you belong to one of the risk groups. People who belong to one of these groups have a higher risk of STDs and are therefore covered by the regulations of the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS). For this reason, they are entitled to free STD testing.
Free STI test from the Municipal Health Service (GGD): only for high-risk groups
Since 2015, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has set a funding cap for free STI testing. This means that less money is available for carrying out free STI tests. Each region has a fixed budget for this purpose, which is determined annually. The Municipal Health Service (GGD) must use this budget to fund all free STI testing. It is therefore very important that the available funds are spent wisely. Unfortunately, this funding cap also means that fewer clients can be seen for a free GGD STI test each year. For this reason, a distinction is made between those who are and those who are not in a risk group.
Which risk groups are eligible for a free STI test from the Municipal Health Service (GGD)?
You belong to a risk group for contracting a possible STI if you:
- You are under 25 years of age;
- Have symptoms that could indicate an STI;
- You are a sex worker;
- A man who has sex with men;
- When you have been warned about an STI by a (former) partner.
Not in a risk group? No free STI test at the GGD
If you do not belong to a risk group, you are generally not eligible for a free STI test at the GGD, and they will refuse your request. This is not because the GGD does not want to help you, but because there is no more money available for additional free STI tests. The GGD also applies strict selection criteria. For example, if you do not live in the city of Amsterdam, the GGD Amsterdam will not be able to assist you. In Utrecht, you must live in the region (province of Utrecht), but this varies per GGD.
Get an affordable, anonymous, and fast STI test at OneDayClinic
If you are not in a high-risk group, you can also visit your own GP or the OneDayClinic STI testing clinic in Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, Nijmegen, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam for an STI test . The STI tests performed at OneDayClinic are similar to those performed at the GGD. The tests are performed in a laboratory, are reliable, and fast. Regular results are available within 1-3 business days, and there is also a rapid test option with results available after 90 minutes. Onedayclinic is the only private clinic recognized by Soa aids nederland, which means that the GGDs are also allowed to refer patients to Onedayclinic.
Long waits for STI tests and results are a thing of the past
Waiting times at the GGD vary per region between three weeks and three months or longer. At OneDayClinic, you can get an STI test right away. We are also open on weekends and in the evenings. After an STI test at the GGD, it takes an average of one week to receive the results. At OneDayClinic, the results of your STI test are available much faster, allowing you to start treatment sooner.
