An STD without having had sexual contact?
This question seems easy to answer, a sexual transmitted disease without sexual contact seems ruled out. In general, this is true, but things are a little more complicated. An STD without sex is not entirely impossible. In this blog, we explain to you how certain STDs are passed on and whether there is a chance of contracting this STD without sexual contact.
In brief
- STDs you can sometimes contract without actually having had penetration
- some STDs you get through the skin, through blood, surfaces or through unwashed hands
- what is also often forgotten is transmission through oral sex: blowjobs without a condom, petting or rimming
- blood-borne STDs you can get through dirty needles, a blood transfusion or mother-to-child transmission
- the only way to know for sure if you are infected is through an STD test

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea without sexual contact
Hepatitis B&C and HIV through blood contact.
Also, these STDs are also easily transmitted from mother to child, as blood from the mother can enter the child's bloodstream, especially at birth. Fortunately, pregnant women in the Netherlands are routinely screened so that this can be prevented.
Getting syphilis without sex
Syphilis can also sometimes be spread through blood, for example in a blood transfusion, but this is rare. In the Netherlands, donor blood is thoroughly tested for this, but in a transfusion in a Third World country, it is potentially possible to contract such diseases if you end up in the hospital there. With syphilis, although extremely rare due to screening of pregnant women, it is also possible to pass the disease from mother to child. So then a child is infected with the disease from birth and no sexual contact is necessary.
Genital warts, highly contagious
Furthermore, genital warts (caused by the virus HPV) are highly contagious, including through surfaces. Of genital warts, for example, we know that it can be transmitted by using the same towel or sharing a razor blade. Many people also contract warts through bare feet in locker rooms and gymnasiums. Fortunately, warts are harmless and usually go away on their own.
Genital herpes without penetration
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The virus that causes cold sores also causes genital herpes. So to get genital herpes you don't have to have sex, because you can also get it from direct or indirect contact with the mouth of someone who has had a cold sore. So, for example, it is possible to get herpes if someone has just touched their cold sore and then touches your genitals. The virus is then on the hands and can cause a genital infection. It is also possible to get herpes from kissing, sharing lip balm or razor blades, among other things, even if people have no symptoms at the time. Any chance of STD?
In general, if one of you has an STD while both of you are still virgins, it is wise to check carefully whether you have performed any other (sexual) acts during which you may have contracted an STD. So check carefully with yourself whether or not there is a chance of an STD and discuss this together. Honesty towards each other is very important.
