HIV test for visa or insurance

In most cases, you take an HIV test to rule out the possibility that you contracted HIV during unsafe sex. But there are also other reasons why you might have an HIV test done. In fact, you may also be asked for an HIV test when applying for a visa or insurance.
HIV test needed for visa applications
HIV test needed to take out insurance
It is also possible that you have to have an HIV test for insurances. In the Netherlands, additional tests may be requested at the time a person takes out life or occupational disability insurance. The insurance company may not just ask for an HIV test, there are some rules that every insurance company has to follow.
An insurance company may ask for an additional HIV test if:
- The insured amount for a life insurance policy is higher than three tons (€300,000) or if an occupational disability insurance is taken out for €50,000 per year;
- You've had a blood transfusion abroad in the past, which the insurance says was an unsafe country;
- Your health report shows that you used drugs using needles that weren't sterile;
- You've been treated for an STD for the past five years.
Insurance companies are allowed to ask clients to make a good risk assessment before they insure someone. If you want to take out an insurance policy abroad there is a chance that there are different rules and you will have to hand in an HIV test before.
Share HIV test results
When asked for an HIV test, you should be able to hand over the test results of the HIV test to the relevant organisation. The Municipal Health Service (GGD), which carries out free HIV tests in the Netherlands at risk groupsdo not give these test results for handing over to insurers or for a visa application. It is also important that the test results are reliable. Many HIV tests are offered online in different price ranges. For an insurance company and visa application it is important that the tests have been carried out in a certified laboratory.
