Can you take an STD test if you have your period?
Many women who come to us wonder if you can take an STD test even when you have your period, or if the STD test is affected by this.
STD test and menstruation
Luckily, you can just take an STD test if you have your period. No matter how many days or how heavily you menstruate, the STD test remains just as reliable.
How does an STD test work when you have your period?
In women, four different STDs can be tested via a vaginal swab, namely chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma and trichomonas. These STDs are caused by bacteria, which settle in the mucous membrane of the vaginal wall, among other things. During menstruation, this mucous membrane is simply intact.
The decrease through the vaginal swab can be slightly more sensitive during your period. Also, some blood can get on the swab and stick, this is not a problem at all for the STD test.
However, it is important not to test until 10 days after unprotected sexual contact. If you would like to take an STD test, you can do so via the OneDayClinic. Make an appointment directly at one of our test points or clinics.
