Multiple STDs at once, is that possible?

It can happen that you have multiple STDs at the same time, this is called a double infection. This is because the different STDs are caused by different pathogens.

In Nederland heeft ongeveer 7% van de patiënten die een SOA-polikliniek bezoeken met een bacteriële SOA een dubbelinfectie. In de meeste gevallen (83%) gaat het om Chlamydia trachomatis (Chlamydia) en Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Gonorroe).

Als je andere SOA’s zoals HIV en hepatitis B meetelt, heeft ongeveer 12% een dubbelinfectie. Bij mensen met HIV wordt er in meer dan 30% een dubbelinfectie gevonden.

Ook worden er meer dubbelinfecties met Gonorroe en Syfilis gevonden bij mannen die seks hebben met mannen.

You can also get an STI at different places in the body. Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can occur at different locations in the body. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can occur in the anus, genitals and throat. It is therefore useful to test at all locations if you have had vaginal, oral and anal sex. It is important to know that treatment of anal chlamydia is different from treatment of chlamydia in the genitals.

Always test on multiple STDs and test all locations?

If you want to be sure that you are not missing any STDs, it is wise to always have multiple STDs tested. The symptoms of different STDs can also resemble each other; if you test for one STD, you run the risk of missing another.
