Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG) is een soa die ontdekt is door Britse onderzoekers. Deze soa veroorzaakt ontstekingen in de urinewegen, eileiders en de baarmoederhals. Onderzoekers denken zelfs dat Mycoplasma Genitalium uiteindelijk kan leiden tot onvruchtbaarheid bij vrouwen. We vertellen je graag wat deze SOA precies inhoudt en hoe je jezelf ertegen kunt beschermen.

The disease Mycoplasma Genitalium was discovered in the 1980s. At the time, it was classified as a bacterial infection. Now, after extensive research, it has been found that it is transmissible through unprotected sexual intercourse. This new STI has therefore been added to the list of existing STIs. Recently, the STI has also been included in the NHG guidelines.

Mycoplasma genitalium symptoms

Mycoplasma genitalium is not common in the Netherlands, but how can you find out if you are a carrier? Many people do not know that they are carrying the STI, because the symptoms of mycoplasma genitalium often go unnoticed. The symptoms mainly include pain in the pelvis, in the testicles, or pain when urinating. Women may experience abdominal pain, bleeding, or pain during sex and excessive discharge. Discharge is also a symptom that can occur in men. If these symptoms appear, it is usually within a few weeks of infection. The long-term effects of Mycoplasma genitalium have not yet been determined, but researchers believe that it can lead to infertility in women, among other things.

Het is lastig om MG bij iemand te ontdekken omdat de klachten niet altijd duidelijk zijn en of je helemaal geen klachten hebt en niet iedere arts bekend is met Mycoplasma Genitalium. Mycoplasma Genitalium heeft veel weg van gonorroe en chlamydia. Vaak wordt er uitgegaan van Mycoplasma Genitalium als er na een test geen gonorroe of chlamydia wordt gevonden, maar de persoon in kwestie wel last van vergelijkbare symptomen heeft. Er is veel resistentie voor de antibiotica voor Mycoplasma dus kan het zijn dat je na behandeling nog steeds klachten blijft houden. Het is dan ook aan te raden om 4-6 weken na behandeling indien er nog klachten zijn te hertesten.
